DID SOMEONE SAY A MONSTER IN PARIS RANT?

(this was actually originally just gonna be a copy and paste of my rant on tumblr, but i got so into it that i ended up going on a whole other tangent, oops!!)

I DIDNT EVEN REALIZE HOW LONG THIS WAS GETTING AND HAD TO MAKE A CUT FOR IT OOPS X2

francoeur is a fucking brilliant character.

their setup for his true reveal is genuinely phenomenal.

the way she falls and he immediately catches her. the music stops like everything is resetting. because up until that moment everything visual and auditory in the film has been trying to depict him as a monster. his adorable chirps warped into terrifying alien growling and his gentle sweet appearance stripped down to just his eyes and towering silhouette. one of most textbook ways to dehumanize a person is to remove their face. we dont get to see his face until the big reveal, already serving to make us rethink him as a character.

and then she falls

and he immediately catches her

THE WAY YOU CAN REWATCH AND SEE HOW HES JUST TRYING TO PEACEFULLY INTERACT WITH PEOPLE. HE WAS DRAWN IN BY THE SOFT MUSIC OF THE OLD LADY'S PHONOGRAPH AND PERCHES ON HER BALCONY TO LISTEN, BUT SHE SCREECHES AND HE JUMPS AWAY, PETRIFIED.

HE TRIED TO PUT HIS HAND ON THE MANS SHOULDER TO CALM HIM DOWN, BUT HE PULLS BACK UNTIL ALL FRANCOEUR HAS IS HIS COAT, AND HES JUST SO CONFUSED. HE JUST STARES AT THE COAT, CURIOUS BUT ABSOLUTELY DUMBFOUNDED.

oh sir are you okay??

wuh- sir???

wuh

huh???

i love how they really show how genuinely devastated and upset he is by everyone seeing him as a monster to the point of internalizing and self loathing. something my friend chara SHOUTOUT TO CHARA pointed out when we were watching it was how during his first song, aptly titled a monster in paris, you see everything through his perspective. the entire world is bathed in blue and red. except. for the most part, ONLY reflective surfaces are red. most notably, eyes.

LOOK AT HOW THEY SEE HIM. THEY LITERALLY THINK HES A DEMON.

and now, he sees himself as a monster as well. but hes not taking it as "fine, im a monster, fuck you", instead, he's just depressed and scared. he doesnt want to be a monster, but he feels powerless, so instead of fighting against or towards it, he chooses to sink into despair and accept defeat. lucille is the one who teaches him to find his 'voice', so to speak (since he cant directly communicate, being nonverbal and all)

he hears her singing the night he was created. we can actually hear the moment he realizes he can sing, which i love so much. we hear him hum a bit in addition to his little chirps as he rings lucille's doorbell, and when he sits alone in the rain, we hear him struggle to start singing, almost like hes just realizing Oh, This Is Something I Can Also Do.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH I LOVE FRANCOEUR AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
